<image:title>Press - Art Lab honors five Staten Islanders at 50th anniversary Tuscan Garden celebration - By Owen Reiter for the Advance/SILive.com</image:title>
<image:caption>STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Art Lab, Staten Island’s renowned art institution known for its independent school of fine and applied art, celebrated its 50th anniversary on Saturday at Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden’s Tuscan Garden in Livingston. The event celebrated the historic milestone and honored five individuals for their steadfast support of culture and the arts throughout the years. The evening opened with welcomes from Lynnanne Daly, the executive director, and Malissa Priebe, director of operations. Craig Manister, president of the board, talked about his 30-year involvement with the organization. The honorees were philanthropist and community stalwart Alice B. Diamond, mother of Staten Island Advance/SILive.com Publisher Caroline Diamond Harrison and wife of the late Richard E. Diamond, former Advance publisher; Virginia Allen, one of the last surviving Black Angels who started working at Sea View Hospital’s tuberculosis units at age 16; artist and art teacher Linda Butti, an Art Lab instructor and member of the board of directors who earned a Doctorate in Fine Art from the City University of New York; photographer Bill Higgins, who has been photographing Staten Island for nearly 50 years, and Rashida Ladner-Seward, executive director of the Universal Temple of the Arts. The celebration began with a Golden Hour in the garden, which featured Tuscany-themed food from Italo and a live performance by Bleeding Rose. “I look back on my career and it’s like . . . I can’t believe all the things I’ve done,” said Bill Higgins. “It’s been amazing. It’s an honor to be honored. It’s sort of like a high point for me.” Linda Butti has been a part of Art Lab since the 1990s. “I love it here. It’s the only place where I can go to feel comfortable and at home with people who share my values,” she said. “These people all feel the same way, so that’s why I love Art Lab. They open themselves to everybody, both rich and poor,” Butti added. Richmond County Public Administrator Edwina Frances Martin was called to the stage to present Alice B. Diamond with citations and plaques from her office and from District Attorney Michael E. McMahon, State Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, Assembly member Sam Pirozzolo, and Art Lab. “I never like to speak, but I just want to say thank you,” Diamond said. “I was here when Art Lab moved to Snug Harbor, and I’m here when I can on Wednesday nights to go to the wonderful sketch class.” Rashida Ladner-Seward said she felt deeply humbled to be honored. “I was reading a study by the World Health Organization that talked about the arts, as helping mental health and wellbeing, and overall, the betterment of society,” Ladner-Seward said. “Staten Island is a very unique borough that is closely knit, and we just need all of the support from this community of individuals like yourselves to continue to do the great work for youth and families, and to bring joy and love to Staten Island and beyond,” she added. Art Lab’s 50th anniversary fundraiser moved indoors for a Speakeasy Afterparty featuring cocktails, snacks, a photo booth, card games, and a silent auction. The grand prize raffle was a Snug Harbor Basket that included a Snug Harbor Membership, a Noble Maritime Collection Membership, a Staten Island Museum Membership, an Art Lab Membership, and an Art Lab Gift Certificate for a free class. Guests danced to live music provided by the Chris Kaiser Band, and enjoyed a “Bees Knees”, the Snug Harbor-sponsored signature cocktail. In 1975, Art Lab opened in a converted factory building on Norwood Avenue in the Clifton section of Staten Island, becoming Staten Island’s first cooperative arts-related teaching facility. It offered workshops and exhibition resources for artists of all levels of experience. As Art Lab grew, the organization underwent restructuring and relocated to larger and more visible headquarters at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Gardens. As it expanded its faculty and curriculum, it undertook a building renovation project at the new site, where it occupied various locations in buildings G & H before settling in its current headquarters on the first floor of building H. Today, its purpose is to offer Staten Island the best possible and most professional independent school of fine and applied art, and to bring knowledge and appreciation of artistic excellence to the metropolitan community through regular classes, exhibitions, demonstrations, workshops, and lectures.</image:caption>

<image:title>Press - Staten Island community leader, arts pioneer honored with street co-naming - By Mike Matteo for SILIVE.COM</image:title>
<image:caption>STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A street on Staten Island’s North Shore now bears the name of a community leader and cultural icon. On Sunday, the corner of Jersey Street and Scribner Avenue in New Brighton was co-named in honor of Sajda Musawwir Ladner, the longtime executive director of the pioneering non-profit Universal Temple of the Arts, who died in 2021. “This ceremony, in honor of Sajda Musawwir Ladner, is the catalyst in the transformation of Jersey Street,” said Lorna Harris, emcee for the event. Located steps from 425 Jersey St., where the Universal Temple of the Arts center opened in 1990, the intersection now bears the name of the singular figure who spent decades of her life committed to the surrounding community. “My mother was here at a time when people encouraged her to go other places, and she stuck, she stayed the course and she affected so many young people,” said Rashida Ladner-Seward, Musawwir Ladner’s daughter and the current executive director of the arts group. Dozens of friends, relatives, and members of Universal Temple of the Arts lined the sidewalks near Jersey Street and Scribner Avenue to honor the legacy of “Miss Sajda,” as many of those in attendance lovingly referred to her. “Her work transformed lives and strengthened this community,” said Councilmember Kamillah Hanks, a Democrat representing the North Shore who spearheaded the street co-naming effort. “She believed that the arts would unite us.” “She made sure that UTA reached young people who needed it most, using creativity to build confidence and opportunity and community,” Hanks continued. In addition to the co-naming, the family of Musawwir Ladner received official citations to honor her work and legacy from other public officials in attendance, including the offices of District Attorney Michael E. McMahon, State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, and Edwina Martin, Richmond County public administrator. The speakers on Sunday praised Musawwir Ladner for her contributions to Staten Island’s performing arts scene, particularly for the borough’s Black residents. “[Sajda Musawwir Ladner] changed the course of Staten Island and really set and create a place for all people, but in particular Black Staten Islanders to have a place where they could go to, that their history and culture could be celebrated, uplifted, and put on the map with so many of the other great cultural institutions throughout New York City,” said Laurie Cumbo, commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs. During her speech, Ladner-Seward also announced her intention to expand Universal Temple of the Arts, and to maintain the current structure on Jersey Street as an arts center named after her mother. “That building is going to stay there. It’s going to be the Sajda Musawwir Ladner Cultural Arts Center,” Ladner-Seward said. “It’s going to serve as many people from this community and beyond as possible and with your support, with your love, we will continue to grow.” Musawwir Ladner was one of the founders of Universal Temple of the Arts which was established in 1967 to support and feature artists of color. She later served as the organization’s artistic and executive director. She led both artistic activities at UTA — musical performances, Staten Island Jazz Festival, poetry — and the community work that is also at the non-profit’s core, particularly outreach to youth.</image:caption>

<image:title>Press - Street Co-Naming Ceremony to Honor Staten Island Cultural Icon Sajda Musawwir Ladner - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE</image:title>
<image:caption>Media Information: Lorna Harris lharris@utasi.org 917-825-4959 SEPTEMBER 21, 2025 Staten Island, NY (August 7, 2025). The Office of Council member Kamillah Hanks in partnership with Universal Temple of the Arts (UTA), is proud to announce a street co-naming ceremony in honor of the late Sajda Musawwir Ladner, visionary founder and former Artistic-Executive Director of UTA. The ceremony will take place on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of Jersey Street and Scribner Avenue—the heart of the community she nurtured for decades. A reception will follow at Universal Temple of the Arts, located at 425 Jersey Street where community members, artists and civic leaders will gather to celebrate her legacy through music, stories and remembrance. “Sajda Musawwir Ladner was more than a cultural leader—she was a force of nature whose artistic vision and commitment to community shaped the soul of Staten Island,” said Council member Kamillah Hanks. “It is only fitting that we honor her name on the very street where her work uplifted generations of families, artists, and youth. Her impact is indelible, and this co-naming ensures her presence remains rooted in the neighborhood she loved so deeply.” For over five decades, Sajda brought world-class performances, arts education, and cultural enrichment to Staten Island’s North Shore. From launching the Staten Island JAZZ Festival to creating arts programs for youth and seniors alike, her work transformed lives and broadened opportunities for underrepresented voices in the arts. The ceremony serves as a tribute to her life’s work and a recommitment to the values she embodied: creativity, equity, and joyful expression for all. About Universal Temple of the Arts Founded in 1969, Universal Temple of the Arts (UTA) is a Staten Island-based nonprofit dedicated to promoting the arts as a tool for personal and community transformation. UTA’s programming spans music, dance, visual arts, and education, engaging youth, adults, and seniors in culturally enriching experiences.</image:caption>

That’s how Rashida Ladner-Seward describes the Universal Temple of theArts (UTA), a grassroots community-based organization that has supported artistic development in underserved Black communities on Staten Island since 1967. Today, UTA, based in New Brighton, works with seasoned professional artists to provide Staten Islanders instruction and exposure to an eclectic blend of fine and performing arts. The not-for-profit organization was founded during a period in American history when hands-on and artistic opportunities weren’t offered to artists of color, said Ladner-Seward, who is currently executive director of the JerseyStreet group. Ladner-Seward grew up with the organization and joined her mother, the late Sajda Musawwir Ladner, a talented seamstress, one of the group’s founders and its longtime director, a few years ago to help with grant writing and launching its first website, she said. Her mother, who died unexpectedly in August 2021, was a costume designer and music and arts enthusiast who poured her “heart and soul” into the UTA, one of the first non-profit organizations of its kind, Ladner-Seward said. And she brought to Staten Island the city’s longest-running community jazz festival — the Staten Island JAZZ Festival, which began in 1988. The event is the most anticipated Staten Island jazz event every year, and brings world-class and community jazz musicians together in public performances. Her mother made it possible for lovers of jazz to experience quality, live performances on Staten Island stages throughthe club’s signature annual event, but she also battled through the 1960s and 1970s to bring to young people educational workshops and forums taught by prominent scholars, visual artists, dancers and poets, Ladner-Seward said. Past programs have focused on Shakespeare and environmental art, among other subjects. “If you look back to theater, cinema, symphony orchestra, ballets, or anything like that, there was not diverse representation,’' Ladner-Seward said. “It was often white. And when you did see people of color, it was very stereotyped.” Most of UTA’s clientele lived in city housing projects on the North Shore at the time of the organization’s founding, saidSheila Rohan, one of its founders and a founding member of the Dance Theater of Harlem. Without free opportunities, most would never have had the chance to explore the arts and the value of creative self-expression, she said. “We were young and looking into our art and really Black culture, looking into ourselves, and we had decided that this would be a place of self-expression,’’ she said. “We didn’t’ think of it as a business at that time. We were thinking of aplace to create.” Rohan stayed involved with UTA until the 1980s, when she took a back seat, remaining involved as a ballet and contemporary dance instructor until 2019, but stepping away from management. Back in the ‘60s and early ‘70s, there was no official address for UTA, Rohan recalled. “We were just working out of our homes,’’ she said. “We got space in PS 18, or even Snug Harbor would give us space to have the classes.” Through the years, free programs expanded to include arts and crafts, pottery and other visual arts. “Some of the kids had to learn how to use a scissor, how to put the glue on the page,’’ Rohan recalled. “They didn’t’ have that opportunity at home.” Etiquette classes also attracted a following in the beginning, she said, focusing on social manners, how to dress for certain occasions and how to properly address an adult. In the ‘80s and the ‘90s, interest in those skills waned, Rohan said with a sigh. For decades, the group played an important role in helping young people of color develop self-esteem through a senseof mastery of the arts, Ladner-Seward said, especially when mainstream opportunities didn’t exist. It does the same today, she said, which is especially valuable for young people who aren’t academic scholars or gifted athletes. “I think back then you had institutions formed, like the Alvin Ailey Dance Company and the Dance Theater of Harlem;those companies were formed because those dancers couldn’t join the New York City Ballet,’’ Ladner-Seward recalled. “The same type of thinking was behind those cultural institutions,’’ she said. “I believe it was also part of the foundations of UTA: We may not be able to have our paintings showcased at a local gallery, but we can create a space for ourselves.” Today, the organization is still relatively small, with about a $250,000 annual budget, derived largely from public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the state Council on the Arts and the New York City Council, along with private donations. Its current home, a storefront at 425 Jersey St., is undergoing extensive renovations after mold was discovered just before the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Key events continue to bring attention to the organization, its mission and the talent it celebrates. Its annual production,“Love in Bloom,” explores the depth and power of love through dance, music, visual arts and poetry. Well-known singers and jazz musicians join the production, as well as local artists. And school-based programming brings the arts into elementary schools still today. Classes are also offered in museums, homeless shelters, group homes, senior citizen and community centers across Staten Island. UTA is also one of the few organizations providing mobile arts and culture courses to make art more accessible to underserved communities. As the group awaits details of 2024 New York City funding, amid $20 million in mandated city budget cuts, future programming remains uncertain, and will be announced as soon as possible, she said. “We’re hopeful,’’ she said. “We’re just waiting. There are lots of people out there who are talented and creative, but may not be able to afford taking a class. We want to bring it to them or bring it out of them.”</image:caption>
